The Albuquerque Collection by André Romão
Through André Romão’s perspective on the Albuquerque Collection of Chinese Ceramics, the exhibition brings together a selection of works from the collection and a group of works by the artist, establishing dialogues between different objects, materials and forms of expression.
About the Exhibition
The exhibition takes the Chinese literati’s studio as its starting point, a type of space that became established during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It was a place for study, reflection and contemplation; for collecting artistic and natural objects; for thinking about nature, philosophy and religion; for reading ancient texts and producing literature; and for practising calligraphy and poetry. A space with its own material culture, filled with objects such as inkstones, brushes, screens, flower vases, antiques, books, tea utensils and incense burners.
Within this studio, words, objects, plants, rituals, references to different periods, literary styles and geographies coexist in a diffuse and vibrant horizontality.
Throughout the exhibition, works by André Romão introduce new relationships with the works in the collection and engage in dialogue with the setting evoked by the literati’s studio.
