Hunchback Society

About the Artists

Through the Hunchback Society collective, Madalena Parreira and Jorge Nesbitt create sculptures inspired by the most disparate ceramic traditions, from Ming dynasty Chinese porcelain to Edo period Japanese ceramic and English Victorian ceramic from Staffordshire.

The Hunchbacks work together across all stages of the process, from moulding the clay to kilning and glazing. Parreira is a visual art and teacher. She currently heads the printmaking department and co-directs the illustration and comics department at Ar.Co. Jorge Nesbitt is also an artist and teacher. He co-founded and headed the illustration and comics department at Ar.Co, where he currently teaches drawing, illustration and ceramics.

Their works, like the combs at the Albuquerque Foundation store, are partly functional, being intended mostly as ‘conversation pieces’.
