Maya Fernandes Kempe
About the Artist
Maya Fernandes Kempe is a German-born sculptor-ceramist and art educator, currently living in Portugal. Her practice is dedicated to ceramic sculpture, with a pedagogical approach through which she founded “Espaço Azul” in Lisbon in 2005, a space for children’s artistic experiences.
Born in Berlin, Germany, in 1975, she studied Philosophy and Literature and graduated in Art Education. She specialized in ceramic sculpture with various European teachers and now lectures at higher education institutions in both Germany and Portugal.
The artist has been exhibiting her work regularly since 2016. Highlights of her career include a solo exhibition at the National Museum of Natural History and Science (MUHNAC) in Lisbon (2024) and an upcoming exhibition at the Museu de Olaria in Barcelos (2025). Maya is co-founder of the cultural and artistic association Ateneu do Catorze and is a member of the sculptor-ceramist group “Convergências.”
