Sofia Magalhães
About the Artist
Sofia Magalhães is a ceramic artist whose practice focuses on the exploration of two-dimensional high and low relief, evoking early forms of communication when writing was inscribed onto the earth. Through landscapes, natural elements, and symbolic narratives such as the myth of Actaeon and Diana. Her work establishes a sensitive dialogue between memory, time, and matter, while also reflecting on the artistic condition and the notion of curiosity.
Beyond clay, she incorporates collages with early 20th-century photographs, faience, metal elements, and objects associated with the passage of time, such as clocks. These compositions bring together historical and emotional layers that, through gestures of concealment and revelation, propose new readings of the past and its presence in the present. More recently, ecological awareness has become central to her research, leading to the development, in collaboration with Francisca Souto, of works in which seeds germinate directly within the ceramic material, fostering a relationship between nature and the artistic object.
Her work has been presented in various exhibitions, including the Lisbon Photographic Archive, Sismógrafo (Porto), Casa da Cerca (Almada), Lisbon Art Weekend, and the Istanbul Biennial, among others. She is currently represented by Narrativa Gallery in London, and her practice also includes leading workshops and classes at her studio, Atelier das Madres.
