Susana Piteira

About the Artist

Susana Piteira’s work unfolds from sculpture, approaching it as a timeless palimpsest that explores what it has been and what it may become. Her artistic practice embraces multiple media — from drawing to ceramics, printmaking, textiles, and multimedia installation. The dialogue between nature and artifice is her central theme, with materials, especially natural ones, and their places of origin playing a fundamental role in her work.

Susana Piteira was born in Lisbon in 1963. She graduated in Fine Arts – Sculpture at the Porto School of Fine Arts (1990) and holds a PhD in Arts – Sculpture from the University of Barcelona (2018). She has been a grantee of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Foundation for Science and Technology, and the Oriente Foundation.

The artist has more than three decades of career, divided between artistic practice, research, and teaching. She has participated in numerous exhibitions, conferences, symposia, artist residencies, and workshops in Portugal and abroad, with notable solo shows including LUX (2023), Bright as Silver, White as Snow (2021), and O Impulso Utópico (2019). She is the author of several sculptural projects for architectural interventions in buildings and public spaces in Portugal, and her work is represented in prestigious collections such as the Serralves Museum and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
