Kintsugi Masterclass

A masterclass exploring the traditional Japanese art of Kintsugi through hands-on restoration techniques

Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese restoration technique that uses natural Urushi lacquer and precious metals to highlight, rather than conceal, the fractures of an object.

In partnership with Estúdio Lázuli, this Masterclass will be led by artist and ceramicist Kristina Mar, who will introduce participants to the cultural context and traditional techniques of Kintsugi.

In this Masterclass, participants will begin restoring a personal ceramic or wooden object, learn about Urushi lacquer and its application, and build a small curing chamber (MURO) to continue the process at home. The final stages of polishing and metal application will be demonstrated using antique Kyoto porcelain pieces prepared in advance by the artist.

The restoration of participants’ personal objects will not be completed during the Masterclass, as the lacquer requires a curing period between stages. Participants will receive guidance to continue the process independently.

**Participants should bring surgical or disposable gloves, a disposable mask, a small towel and a cardboard box suitable for transporting their object.

All specialist materials and tools, including Urushi lacquer, Kintsugi materials, precious metal and prepared Kyoto porcelain pieces, will be provided.
