Poetic Fragments: Collage and Visual Haiku, with Letícia Barreto

Collage brings together fragments of images, words, and materials that, when rearranged and placed in relation to one another, can generate new meanings and unexpected associations. Inspired by haiku – a Japanese poetic form that seeks to capture, in just a few words, the contemplation of a single moment – this workshop invites participants to explore the intersection of poetry and image, experimenting with conciseness, observation, and the creation of small visual compositions.

Drawing on images from the Albuquerque Foundation’s collection, the foundation’s architecture and gardens, as well as references to André Romão’s exhibition Poems: The Albuquerque Collection by André Romão, participants will be invited to fragment, recombine, and bring images, words, and textures into dialogue with one another. Rather than simply illustrating poems or reproducing references, the goal is to discover new relationships between these elements, giving shape to personal visual narratives open to surprise and imagination.

About Letícia Barreto

Letícia Barreto is a visual artist and art educator. She holds a Master’s degree in Visual Arts and Intermedia from the University of Évora and studied Fine Arts at the Lorenzo de’ Medici Institute in Florence, Italy, as a recipient of a Rotary International Foundation scholarship. She has exhibited internationally since 2000 and develops a multidisciplinary artistic practice in which the concept determines the language and processes employed. In recent years, collage and mixed-media techniques have taken centre stage in her work, through the exploration of fragments, visual associations and shifts in meaning.

Since 2023, she has collaborated regularly with Collage Working Club in Lisbon. In 2024, she was an artist-in-residence at the Art & Craft Refúgio project, where she developed collage workshops for immigrants and refugees. She is also the founder of Decollage Lab, a travelling project dedicated to experimentation with collage and mixed-media techniques. In her artistic and educational practice, she approaches collage as a space for experimentation, where images and materials can be fragmented, recombined and brought into new relationships.
