About Grada Kilomba
Grada Kilomba is a Portuguese artist whose work interrogates concepts of memory, trauma, violence and historical repetition. Kilomba is best known for her subversive and unique practice of storytelling, in which she gives body, voice, form and movement to silenced stories – using performance, dance, video, text, sculpture, installation and sound landscapes.
In her immersive large-scale works, Kilomba exercises what she describes as ‘poetic disobedience’, a mode in which radical poetic images interrupt the collective imaginary and the cycle of prevalent historical violence, both in narratives and architectures, inside and outside, in the public space.
