A Visit Exploring the World of the Chinese Scholar’s Studio: Between Tradition and Contemporary Art

Taking André Romão’s exhibition Poemas as its starting point, this visit explores the Chinese Scholar’s Studio, its historical context and how it evolved across different dynasties, with a focus on its role as a space for study, contemplation and artistic creation.

Through the Four Traditional Arts – music, the strategy game weiqi, calligraphy and painting – the visit explores the practices, materials and values associated with Chinese literati culture, while also examining the connections between different artistic languages. In dialogue with the exhibition, visitors will be invited to look beyond these traditions and reflect on how bringing together objects from different periods and contexts can generate new interpretations and open up new creative possibilities.
